The Experience

Tongli Water Town opens the day—one of six ancient water towns south of the Yangtze River Delta, built around rivers, stone bridges and centuries-old house complexes. Your guide meets you at your hotel at 9 a.m. and drives you there to walk the narrow lanes where traditional residences, gardens and temples still stand. The Tuisi Garden, the town's most elaborate, spreads across ponds, marble boats, waterside pavilions and rockeries designed to fit the local landscape. Lunch is vegetarian, served in Tongli itself.

The Suzhou Museum comes next. I.M. Pei, the architect, designed it when he returned to his hometown, and the building holds a vast collection of ancient ceramics, cultural relics and woodcarvings. From there you move to the Humble Administrator's Garden, the largest of Suzhou's classical gardens at 52,000 square meters and one of China's four most famous. A boat carries you along the canal from the garden to Pingjiang Road, a 1.6-kilometer-long street that runs beside the old Pingjiang River and keeps its ancient water-town character intact. Small alleys branch off into old residential areas—now converted to bars, teahouses and cafes but still holding their original architecture. Dinner follows, with vegetarian, Western and local speciality options available. The day closes with a Kunqu Opera performance, a World Intangible Cultural Heritage of China and the "mother" of a hundred opera forms including Peking Opera.
