Step-by-step itinerary

Explore Suzhou's gardens and water town

  • Meet guide at hotel at 9:00 a.m.
  • Visit Master-of-Nets Garden
  • Walk along Pingjiang Road
  • Visit Suzhou Museum
  • Take boat tour in Tongli Water Town
  • Lunch at local restaurant

The Experience

Your guide meets you at your hotel at 9 a.m. and drives you to Master-of-Nets Garden, a Qing Dynasty mansion garden that fits centuries of gardening craft into a space less than one-sixth the size of Suzhou's larger Humble Administrator's Garden. Bridges, pavilions and water channels create the illusion of depth in a confined area — the kind of detail a guide can point out but a map cannot. From there you walk Pingjiang Road, a 1,606-meter stone path with a river running alongside it, lined with white-walled houses and old bridges that form the visual core of ancient Suzhou.

Lunch at a local restaurant comes next, then Suzhou Museum, designed by architect I.M. Pei and built in his hometown. The collection spans ancient ceramics, cultural relics and woodcarvings; the lotus pool at the center is the landmark most visitors photograph. The final stop is Tongli Water Town, one of six famous ancient water towns in the Yangtze River Delta region. You take a boat through it to see the traditional residences, gardens and temples that make up the town's core — the kind of place where the water itself is the street.

The tour includes an air-conditioned vehicle, a professional guide who speaks English (French, Chinese and Japanese are also available), and all admission fees. Hotel pickup and drop-off are part of the booking, so you don't arrange transport to the first stop or from the last one.
