The experience

Your guide meets you at your Suzhou hotel lobby or the railway station and takes you first to the Lingering Garden, built during the Ming Dynasty over 430 years ago. You walk through the classical Suzhou-style garden and its architecture while the guide explains the history and design principles behind it: the kind of detail that transforms a garden from pretty to meaningful. The garden is the foundation of the day. Everything after it moves faster.

From there you head to Pingjiang Road, a charming street lined with boutique shops selling tea pots, ceramics, fans and silk. You stop for lunch here (Suzhou specialties like Cherry meat, Beggar Chicken and Liquor Xiaoyuanzi are the well-known ones), and eat at your own cost while you browse the shops if you want to. Then comes the boat ride on the Grand Canal, a UNESCO Heritage Site and the longest artificial waterway in the world. You see the peaceful daily life of locals, historical buildings and red lanterns from the water, which is a different angle on the city than walking through it.

The final stop is Tiger Hill. You hike up 300 stairs to reach the Cloudy Pagoda, built over 1,300 years ago, and your guide shares the history of the site. After that, you're transferred back to your hotel or the railway station. The whole day is eight hours. Entrance fees and the guide are included. You pay for lunch and any shopping you do on Pingjiang Road.
