The Experience

Our guide met us outside the hotel at 9am with a clipboard and a knowing smile — she'd done this route a hundred times and could tell we were the type who'd want to linger at each stop instead of rushing through. The Skylon Tower elevator climbs 520 feet in a glass box, and the moment the doors open, you're standing in front of all three falls at once: the Horseshoe on one side, the American and Bridal Veil across the river. The observation deck is half indoors, half outdoors, so you can step out into the mist if you want, or stay warm and just look. Most people spend twenty minutes up there taking the same photo from different angles.

After that, the Incline Railway takes you down the escarpment — it's steep enough that you feel it in your knees, and the whole ride takes maybe five minutes. (Fair warning: it doesn't run November through April, so if you're going in winter, you'll skip this part.) Then comes Journey Behind the Falls, which is the part that actually justifies the tour. You descend 125 feet into tunnels carved into the rock, and the sound gets louder as you go deeper. The observation decks put you right at the base of the Horseshoe Falls, and the spray is real — bring a light jacket or you'll regret it. Your guide will explain how much water is moving past you every second, which sounds like a fact you'd forget immediately, but you won't.

The last stretch is a walk along the Niagara Parkway through Queen Victoria Park, where the guide points out the historic power station and the different rock formations in the gorge. It's a narrated walk, so you're not just wandering — there's context for what you're looking at. The whole thing is about 2.5 kilometers on foot, spread across the morning, so it's not a hike.
