The Experience
I’ll admit, we almost missed our slot for the Skylon Tower — I’d lost track of time staring at some kid’s glowing shoes near the ticket line. Our guide, Sam, just grinned and waved us in anyway. The elevator ride up felt like stepping into a slow-motion movie; my ears popped and someone behind me whispered “wow” before we even reached the top. When those doors slid open, it hit me — that cold rush of air, the distant roar from both the Canadian and American Falls, city lights flickering everywhere. I pressed my forehead to the glass for a second longer than I meant to.
Back on ground level, we started walking along the edge where you can actually hear the water thudding below your feet. Sam pointed out little things — like how you can spot which side is Canada by the color of the mist at dusk (never would’ve noticed). He told stories about daredevils and old hotels that aren’t there anymore. At one point, an older couple asked if he ever got tired of this view; he just laughed and said every night’s different because of who’s standing beside him. That stuck with me.
The crowd thickened as it got closer to fireworks time. Someone nearby was eating those vinegar fries (the smell still clings to my jacket), and kids were running circles around their parents. Sam led us to a spot he promised was “the one” — not right up front but somehow better because you could see both falls in your line of sight. The first firework went off before I was ready; everyone gasped at once, even people who’d been pretending not to care. I’m not sure why but seeing all those colors reflected on water made everything feel bigger than it is in photos. We stood there quiet for a while after it ended — nobody really wanted to leave yet.
