What's the actual time you get to stand in front of the falls without a schedule pushing you along? Three hours, maybe four if you add the boat cruise. That's the real difference between a quick photo stop and actually being there. The day starts with pickup from central Toronto locations, then it's a drive out to the Niagara Parks Power Station — a historic building that sits right in the middle of the story, and your guide (a licensed Niagara Parks interpreter) walks you through how the whole region was built around the water's power. It's the kind of detail most people skip, but it changes how the falls look when you finally see them.

Once you arrive at Niagara Falls, the time is yours. Some people head straight to Journey Behind the Falls, where you walk down into the rock face and feel the actual roar of the water coming down — it's loud enough that you understand why they call it that. Others take the Hornblower Niagara Cruise, the boat that goes right up to the Canadian Horseshoe Falls and the American Falls, close enough that you're in the spray. The boat runs April through early December; in winter months it's replaced with access to the Power Station Tunnel or the Butterfly Conservatory instead. You can also ride the Skylon Tower for the view from above, or just walk the edge and let the sound and the scale of it sink in. The tour includes a stop at Clifton Hill too — that's the strip of arcades, the SkyWheel, Ripley's, the casino — so if you want to break up the falls with something else, it's there.

There's also a maple syrup tasting stop on the way, where you can try fudge, poutine, maple beer, or ice wine if that appeals to you. The whole day runs about ten hours door-to-door, and you're in a comfortable air-conditioned bus the whole drive, which matters on a long day.
