The Experience

You start with pickup at your hotel in Kampot city center and head out by tuk-tuk to the salt fields, where farmers work the shallow ponds that supply Cambodia's domestic market and export goods. The landscape is flat and open, and you see firsthand how salt is harvested using traditional methods. From there the route winds inland through the Cambodian countryside—paddy fields, small farms, limestone formations dense with vegetation—toward Phnom Chhngok Cave Temple, a hulking limestone karst that rises from the landscape. The mountain houses many hidden chambers and stalactites formed over millennia; the largest cave holds an ancient red brick temple resting under a massive rock formation that resembles an eagle. The temple was probably built during the 7th century, in the pre-Angkorian Funan period.

The second half of the tour takes you to Secret Lake, or Brateak Krola Lake, which is actually a dam—a massive man-made reservoir built with slave labor during the Khmer Rouge era. It is a stark and sobering stop, and the guide will explain its history and significance. After that you visit a Kampot pepper farm to learn how the region's pepper is grown traditionally and organically. Kampot pepper has held the reputation of the world's best pepper among chefs and foodies for more than a century, and the farm visit explains why the cultivation method and terroir matter so much to that ranking.

Transportation is by tuk-tuk throughout, and your driver also serves as an English-speaking guide; a French-speaking guide is available through La Plantation. All entrance fees are included, and the tour runs five to six hours. The winding dirt roads, especially by motorbike, can be tiring, but the route is manageable by tuk-tuk. Hotel pickup and drop-off in Kampot city center are included in the price.
