The experience
The tour runs three to five hours and starts with pickup from your accommodation. Your private driver speaks English and handles all the navigation, so you're free to watch the landscape change as you move through Kampot's countryside. The first decision is the pepper plantation: Bo Tree Farm costs nothing, while La Plantation charges $5 for a guided tour and a tasting of their black, red, white and fresh salted peppers. The choice is yours at booking.
Between the plantation and the salt fields, the route passes through local villages and stops at Secret Lake, a man-made reservoir built during the Khmer Rouge era that expands and contracts with the seasons. The salt fields come last, timed so you arrive before sunset. There's a café nearby if you want to sit and watch the light change over the water. Your driver then takes you back to your accommodation.
