The experience
The day starts with a 30-minute drive to a Kampot city viewpoint where your guide points out the sites you'll visit later: the salt fields, cave, villages and pepper farm visible across the landscape. From there, another 30 minutes takes you up Bokor Mountain on a scenic drive with a short walk through rainforest. At the summit, you spend around three hours exploring the old structures: the Black Palace, Yeymou Statue, the abandoned hotel and casino, a pagoda, and a Catholic church. Cliffs behind these buildings overlook the ocean.
After Bokor, you stop at Brateak Krola Lake (a man-made reservoir locals call Secret Lake), where a guide walks you through its history from the Khmer Rouge era. You get free time to relax in a hammock at a lakeside restaurant with fresh coconut or soft drink included. The pepper plantation comes next: a guide leads you through the farm for a tasting and tour of the crops, and there's a tall modern structure called the Spice Bar where you can try pepper drinks or ice cream. Phnom Kbalromeas, a cave site inhabited in Neolithic times, takes about 30 minutes to explore with your guide through narrow and open passages. The final stop is Cambodia's largest salt field, where you learn how sea salt is produced and have time to walk and photograph the landscape before returning to your hotel.
