The experience
You start with a hike up to the edge of Actun Loch Tunich, a massive sinkhole formed long ago when the cave ceiling collapsed. Once you reach the rim, you rig into the rappel system and begin the 300-foot descent through the rainforest canopy. The rock face drops straight down, and the trees grow thick around you as you lower yourself toward the cave floor below. The scale of the sinkhole becomes clear only once you're partway down and can see how far the walls stretch in every direction.
At the bottom, you eat a picnic lunch to recover before the return hike. The trek back up follows the same route, and the whole day, from hotel pickup to drop-off, runs 9 to 10 hours. An air-conditioned vehicle handles transport, and a guide who speaks English or Spanish stays with the group throughout. Bottled water is provided, and all fees and taxes are built into the price.

Is this one for you? This rappel demands high cardiovascular fitness and a strong stomach for sustained vertical descent, so it suits experienced climbers or adventurers comfortable on rock faces. The 300-foot drop and remote sinkhole setting are not a beginner's introduction to rappelling.
