The experience

Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary sits in the Stann Creek District as the world's first jaguar preserve, though the big cats themselves stay hidden in the forest. What you actually see on the trails are the tracks they leave behind: paw prints of jaguars, tapirs, deer and other wildcats pressed into the earth. The sanctuary protects over 290 bird species, and the forest canopy carries constant movement and sound. The hikes vary in length and difficulty, so your guide adjusts the route to your fitness level and the time available.

The day starts with a stop at Maya Center, the traditional Mayan village at the preserve entrance. Local artisans sell handmade crafts here, and it's the last settlement before the forest deepens. From there, you enter the sanctuary on foot. Ben's Bluff is the signature hike: a climb that opens onto a view of the entire basin spread below you, the forest rolling to the horizon. If the waterfall trail is passable that day, you can swim in the pool at its base, a genuine relief in the tropical heat. Your licensed guide speaks English or Spanish and carries the knowledge of what animal made which track, which birds call from which canopy level, and where the terrain gets steep enough to need careful footing.

The tour runs four hours from pickup to return. You'll need at least moderate fitness for the hiking. The trails are uneven and some sections climb. Bring sturdy shoes with grip, sunscreen and a hat. The sanctuary provides bottled water, and the air-conditioned vehicle means you're not walking the whole day in the heat: transport bookends the hiking itself.

What is Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary actually like to hike?

Cockscomb Basin is a tropical forest preserve with trails of varying difficulty, from short walks to longer climbs like Ben's Bluff. The forest floor shows tracks of jaguars, tapirs and other wildlife, and the sanctuary is home to over 290 bird species. A waterfall with a swimming pool sits on one of the routes, and the overlook from Ben's Bluff shows the entire basin.

Do I need to be very fit to do this hike?

The tour requires at least moderate physical fitness because the trails are uneven and some sections climb. Your guide adjusts the route based on your fitness level and the time available, so you're not locked into a single difficulty. The four-hour duration includes transport time, not four hours of continuous hiking.

What happens at Maya Center?

Maya Center is the traditional Mayan village at the entrance to the preserve, where the tour stops before heading into the sanctuary. Local artisans sell handmade arts and crafts there, giving you a chance to see the community and buy directly from makers. It's the last village before the forest.
