The Experience

Most people see Iguazu Falls from a platform. You'll do that too — but only after you've already been soaked by them. The day starts with hotel pickup in Puerto Iguazu and a drive into Iguazu National Park on the Argentine side, where the subtropical forest around you fills with sound: toucans, parrots, the occasional coati moving through the canopy. Your bilingual guide handles the entrance fee logistics, and then you're on an ecological train cutting through the rainforest toward Devil's Throat, the largest single waterfall in the system. The platform overlooks millions of liters of water dropping at different heights — it's the kind of view that makes you understand why UNESCO called this a World Heritage Site.

After Devil's Throat, you choose your circuit. The lower one takes you down into the forest itself, where you feel the humidity and hear the jungle properly. The upper circuit keeps you elevated, with panoramic views and less physical demand — your guide will steer you toward whichever one has shorter lines that day. There's free time for lunch (not included) before the real part begins: an open-air truck carries you deeper into the tropical forest, and then you descend 300 meters of stairs to the pier. The boat ride covers 6 kilometers, including 2 kilometers of rapids, and takes you directly into the spray of Tres Mosqueteros and San Martín falls. You will get soaked. Waterproof bags are provided, but expect to emerge dripping and grinning. The boat holds up to 45 passengers, so it's not intimate, but the scale of water around you makes that irrelevant.

One thing to know: river levels sometimes close the boat ride — it happens about twice a year, usually during El Niño patterns. If that occurs, you'll be offered an alternative or a partial refund. The tour order can shift based on crowds and weather, and if you have a flight the same day, tell the operator in advance so they can time the return properly. Minimum age is 13, and the boat company's staff make the final call on who can board based on health restrictions listed at booking.
