Four Days Between the Falls and the Elephants

You see Victoria Falls from 19 viewpoints and sleep two nights in the falls area; spend a full day on game drives in Hwange National Park spotting elephants and lions; eat a traditional four-course feast with drumming and dancing; and travel with a licensed guide who handles all transport and timing. The Experience

You land in Victoria Falls and within hours you're standing at 19 different viewpoints along the Zambezi gorge, watching water plunge 100 meters into rapids that churn below. The falls stretch 1,708 meters across — the largest single curtain of falling water on earth — and the spray rises so thick it's called "Mosi-oa-Tunya," the Smoke that Thunders. Your guide picks you up from the lodge, takes you through Devil's Cataract and the Main Falls and the Horseshoe, and three hours later you're back at Shearwater Explorers Village. That evening you change into a traditional robe at the Boma, eat a four-course feast of game meat and local dishes cooked over open flame, and watch drummers and dancers perform in the half-open air. If you're brave, you eat a dried Mopane Worm and get a certificate to prove it.

Day two starts at 6 a.m. — pickup from your lodge, then a two-and-a-half-hour drive to Hwange National Park along the Bulawayo Road. Breakfast arrives first, then the morning game drive. Hwange is Zimbabwe's largest park and the animals are everywhere: elephants, buffalo, lions, wild dogs, giraffes, impalas, birds you won't name. The waterholes scattered across the park are where you see them best, standing or drinking in the heat. Lunch breaks the day in half. The afternoon game drive runs until dusk, and you sleep that night at Hwange Safari Lodge.

On day three you return to Victoria Falls. At 3:30 p.m. a boat picks you up for the Zambezi sunset cruise — hippos surface near the hull, crocodiles slide past, flocks of birds skim the water as the sun drops behind the African skyline. The light turns gold and then red. You're back at the lodge by 6:30 p.m. The next morning, your driver takes you to the airport and the tour ends.
