The Experience

We met our guide right by the entrance to Victoria Falls—he was already laughing about how soaked we’d get. He wasn’t kidding. The sound is a low roar that gets inside your chest before you even see anything. I didn’t realize how much mist there’d be; it’s like walking into a rainstorm that smells faintly sweet and green. Our guide pointed out the best spot for photos but honestly, I just stood there for a minute letting the spray hit my face. You can hear people shouting in surprise when the wind shifts and soaks them—felt like everyone was in on some private joke.

Lunch at Rainforest Cafe was simple but good—I tried something with maize meal (sadza?) and nearly forgot to look up because a vervet monkey darted past our table. After eating, we walked to the Victoria Falls Bridge. Standing on it, you can see Zimbabwe on one side and Zambia on the other; I waved at some kids selling crafts below and they actually waved back. The bridge itself feels old but solid, with all these faded plaques. Our guide told us a bit about its history—apparently Livingstone wanted “the smoke that thunders” to be visible from passing trains. Not sure if he managed that.

The Big Tree is massive—like, you can’t get your arms around even a tenth of it. There’s an inscription from Livingstone carved into the bark; it’s faded but still kind of cool to think about who else has stood here gawking up at this baobab over two thousand years old. At the crafts market nearby, I tried bargaining for a little wooden elephant (I’m terrible at haggling—the seller grinned and threw in a bead bracelet anyway).

The sunset cruise on the Zambezi River was quieter than I expected. There’s this moment when everything goes gold and hippos start grunting somewhere off to the left—you just drift along with cold drinks in hand, watching birds skim over the water. One guy caught sight of an elephant bathing near shore and everyone scrambled for their cameras except me; I just watched until it disappeared behind reeds.

Boma Dinner is loud—drums everywhere, dancers swirling past your table while you try grilled warthog or sadza again (I still don’t know if I liked it). They handed out drums for us to join in, and my hands stung after five minutes but I couldn’t stop laughing. On the way back, my clothes smelled faintly smoky from dinner mixed with river air. That last walk under quiet stars sticks with me more than anything else.
