The Experience

We kicked off our first evening in Victoria Falls with a slow drift down the Zambezi. The boat left just after 4pm—right when the air starts to cool and the river smells fresh. Our guide, Tinashe, was quick to point out a pod of hippos bobbing near the reeds. I remember the sound of ice clinking in my glass as someone handed me a ginger beer—there were cocktails too, but I wanted to keep my head clear for photos. Elephants showed up on the far bank, ears flapping, almost close enough to hear them splash. The sun dipped low around 6:15pm (give or take, depending on the month), painting everything gold. We snacked on samosas and little meat pies while birds darted overhead—kingfishers mostly, if you’re into birding.

The next morning started early with an 8am pickup. After a quick drive, we entered the rainforest park—don’t forget your entry ticket; it’s not included. The mist from the falls hit us right away, cool and almost sweet-smelling. Our guide led us past the David Livingstone statue and along slippery paths where you can feel the thunder of water under your feet. There’s this one spot where you get sprayed so much you’ll want to tuck your phone away fast. We stopped at the Big Tree—a baobab that’s been here longer than most stories—and ended up chatting with local vendors at the market outside. If you’re hungry after all that walking, there’s an option for lunch at Lookout Café (the view is wild). By noon we were back at our lodge, shoes damp but grinning.
