The experience

You start with an early pickup from your Victoria Falls hotel after breakfast and a drive to the Zambezi River. Once there, you put on your gear and run through key safety moves before hiking a steep trail down to the put-in. Your group's mix of abilities and what you want to do determines whether you take a guide-controlled oar raft or a passenger-controlled paddle raft: the operator chooses based on what will keep everyone safe and having fun.

The rafting itself spans Class IV to V rapids over the course of your half-day or full-day trip. You work together with your group to paddle hard and steer through whitewater that is widely recognized as the wildest grade 5 on the planet. After you finish, a barbecue lunch and open bar wait at the takeout, then you head back to your hotel to shower and rest. Later in the afternoon, the operator picks you up again for the sunset cruise on the upper Zambezi, where the water is calm and wildlife comes to drink at the banks. You sip local beers while the light fades, and you're back at your hotel by around 6pm.

The full day runs about eight hours from start to finish. A live English-speaking guide is with you the whole time, and the operator handles all transport to and from your lodging. Bottled water, snacks, lunch and alcoholic beverages are included.

Top questions

What happens if it rains?

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.

What are Class IV and V rapids like on the Zambezi?

Class IV–V rapids are steep, powerful whitewater with large waves and strong currents that require active paddling and quick reactions. The Zambezi below Victoria Falls is recognized as one of the most intense grade 5 stretches in the world, so expect a physically demanding ride with no flat sections to recover between rapids.

Do I have to paddle, or can the guide do it?

You choose. The operator offers both a guide-controlled oar raft, where the guide steers and you ride, and a passenger-controlled paddle raft, where your group paddles together and helps navigate. The choice depends on your group's fitness level and how much control you want.

What happens if I've never rafted before?

You go through safety training and practice key maneuvers before you hit the river, so first-timers are welcome. The operator matches you to the right raft type based on your experience and fitness, and a live guide is with you the whole time.

Is the sunset cruise part of the same booking, or separate?

The sunset cruise is part of the same full-day package. After lunch and a rest at your hotel, the operator picks you up again in the afternoon for the cruise on the calm upper Zambezi, so you experience both the whitewater and the wildlife in one day.

What's included in the open bar on the sunset cruise?

Local beers are included during the sunset cruise. Bottled water and snacks are also provided throughout the day, along with a barbecue lunch after the rafting finishes.

What if I'm not fit enough for Class V rapids?

The operator assesses your group's fitness and abilities before choosing your raft type and can adjust the experience to keep it safe and fun. You should have at least a moderate level of physical fitness. The activity is not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries, poor cardiovascular health, or pregnancy.
