The Experience
You start with pickup from your hotel in Victoria Falls and a drive through local villages to the river. The guide walks you down a gorge hike to the water's edge — the walls already tower above you — then you're in the raft, paddle in hand, helmet and life jacket fitted. The Zambezi above the falls is calm; below it, the river fractures into Class IV and V rapids that drop through a gorge more than 100 meters deep at the falls and widens to 200 meters by the end of the day. You paddle through the chaos, reading the water with your guide, timing your strokes to punch through waves and holes that would flip a raft without the right angle.
Between rapids, the canyon opens enough to see the walls and breathe. Depending on water level and the guide's call, you can jump off rocks into pools or swim in calmer sections. Lunch happens on a beach partway through, with drinks and light refreshments throughout the day to keep you going. The full-day trip runs about six hours on the water and in the canyon; the half-day covers the most intense rapids in a shorter window. Water levels shift with the season, so the operator confirms which version — low-water or high-water — you'll run when you book.
The hike out of the canyon mirrors the way in: steep, rocky, and real work after hours of paddling. You'll need a moderate level of fitness and proper shoes — the canyon is no place for flip-flops. Wear a T-shirt and shorts you don't mind soaking. All rafting gear is provided: helmet, life jacket, and paddle.
