The experience

The raft is a stern-mount design with a frame and two big wooden oars, which means the guide has full control while you and the kids stay secure in the middle. Most rapids on the Zambezi run two or three different options (left, center, right) at different difficulty levels, and the guide chooses which line to take based on the water and your group. You paddle a distance of 16–23km depending on the water levels that day, moving through a series of Class 1–4 rapids while the Batoka Gorge rises around you.

Kids from age 10 can join, and they get special USA-made handle straps so they sit low and secure while holding on. Most children try paddling through some of the smaller rapids. Others prefer to grip the rope and feel the water move beneath them. The guide's decision is final on which rapids you run, especially with little kids in the boat, so safety comes before the adrenaline. Between rapids, there is time to swim in the warm water if you want to.

Lunch is a buffet served on top of the Batoka Gorge overlooking the river, with cookies and fruit for the kids during the day. The guide speaks English and has logged over 20 years on this river. Safety kayakers travel with the group. Round-trip transfer is included, and the whole day runs about six hours from start to finish.
