You're picked up from your hotel around 30 minutes before departure and driven to the launch point. The cruise itself runs two hours, timed so you're on the water as the sun moves toward the horizon. A guide travels with the boat and points out animals and birds as they appear. Hippo and crocodile are frequent, and elephant sometimes comes down to drink at the water's edge. The river narrows and widens through different sections, and the light changes fast enough that the same bend looks different every few minutes.
