Zambezi River Sunset Cruise: Wildlife & African Sunsets at Victoria Falls
Hippos surface and birds dive as the sun drops behind the African skyline.
A two-hour sunset cruise on the Zambezi River near Victoria Falls includes hotel pickup from Victoria Falls town, a live English-speaking guide, finger snacks and local beverages. The boat departs in the late afternoon (4:30pm in summer, 4:00pm in winter) and returns before dark. Wildlife sightings—hippo, crocodile, elephant and bird species—are common, and the shifting light offers strong photo opportunities as the day ends.
Step-by-step itinerary
Sunset cruise on Zambezi River
- Board the sunset cruise
- Enjoy scenic views of Zambezi River
- Spot wildlife like hippos and elephants
- Watch the African sunset
- Enjoy finger snacks and drinks
The Experience
You're picked up from your hotel around 30 minutes before departure and driven to the launch point. The cruise itself runs two hours, timed so you're on the water as the sun moves toward the horizon. A guide travels with the boat and points out animals and birds as they appear; hippo and crocodile are frequent, and elephant sometimes comes down to drink at the water's edge. The river narrows and widens through different sections, and the light changes fast enough that the same bend looks different every few minutes.
Finger snacks and drinks are served throughout—beer, wine, local spirits and soft drinks. The boat is wheelchair accessible, and infants can travel in a pram or stroller, or sit on an adult's lap. Children from age 3 are welcome. Departures run daily year-round, with the schedule shifting between summer (August 1–April 30, departing 4:30pm) and winter (May 1–July 31, departing 4:00pm) to follow the sunset.
If you need a language other than English—French, German, Italian or Spanish—private tour options are available at an additional cost, subject to availability. The river usage fee is included in the standard booking.
