The experience

The tour opens with a Zambezi sunset cruise on your arrival day: a two-and-a-half-hour float downriver with a three-course dinner, beer, wine and soft drinks served on board. Hippos, crocodiles, buffalo and elephants often appear along the banks. Flocks of birds work the waterline as the sun drops behind the African skyline. Your driver returns you to the lodge afterward.

Day two splits between two perspectives of Victoria Falls itself. A guided walk takes roughly two and a half hours through the rainforest to the base of the falls (Mosi oa Tunya, "the Smoke that Thunders"), where your guide explains the geography and history of the site and the local people. After lunch, you transfer to the helipad for a scenic flight over the falls, the Zambezi River and the Batoka Gorges, seeing the water from the air as it flows into the gorge below. The helicopter tour has two options. The longer one costs extra.

Day three starts early. A morning game drive at Stanley and Livingstone Private Game Reserve searches for the Big 5, including the endangered black rhino. Animals are most active when temperatures are lower. Tea and coffee come before the drive. In the afternoon, a two-hour cultural village tour takes you into a rural settlement near Victoria Falls to see daily life firsthand: how chores divide between men and women, traditional cooking methods, local customs. You can join in the work and cook on a central fireplace if you choose. The route passes through the city's residential areas so you see the shift from village to urban setup.

Day four is your departure. The driver collects you for the airport transfer.
