The experience

The day starts with pickup from your hotel, train station or airport in Dong Hoi between 7:30 and 8:00 AM, then heads toward Phong Nha along the Ho Chi Minh Trail. Your guide shares the history of the route as you travel. By 9:00 AM you're at Dark Cave, where the main event waits: a 400-meter double-rope zipline that launches you out over the Chay River. Once you land at the cave entrance, you swap the harness for a headlamp and move into the darkness to find stalactites, rock formations and the cave's interior passages. A natural mud bath sits deep inside, and if you want more water time, kayaking and other activities are available before you leave.

Lunch comes at 11:30 AM at a restaurant inside Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park, where you can order local specialties or vegetarian dishes. At 1:30 PM you arrive at Phong Nha Cave itself, where a dragon boat carries you along the Son River past riverside villages and limestone peaks. Inside, the cave opens into chambers of shimmering stalactites, stalagmites and an underground river that runs through the rock. The boat ride and cave walk take up the afternoon before the return journey begins around 4:00 PM. Drop-off is either in Phong Nha town by 4:25 PM or back in Dong Hoi by 5:00 PM, depending on which option you choose at checkout.
