The experience

The day starts with pickup from your hotel or train station in Dong Hoi between 7:30 and 8:00 AM, or 8:45 AM if you're staying in Phong Nha town. You arrive at Dark Cave by 9:00 AM ready to zipline. The famous double-rope crossing over the Chay River is the entry point, and from there you move into the cave itself with a headlamp to navigate the underground passages. The cave sits inside Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park, a limestone landscape that runs for miles, and the zipline is the quickest way to reach the far side without wading through the river.

Once inside Dark Cave, the route branches depending on what you choose at checkout: you can soak in the natural mud bath deep in the cave, take a 400-meter zipline if you want a longer flight, or kayak the emerald waters of the Chay River outside. Water activities fill the morning hours. Lunch happens around 12:30 PM at a restaurant in the national park, and you can add a meal there or bring your own. By 1:30 PM you're at Phong Nha Cave for the afternoon portion. A dragon boat ride along the Son River, where you drift past riverside villages and limestone peaks before entering the cave to see stalactites, stalagmites and the underground river. The boat ride is the pace here. You watch rather than do, which gives your legs a rest after the morning's climbing and ziplining.

Return transport leaves Phong Nha Cave around 4:00 PM, reaching Phong Nha town by 4:25 PM or Dong Hoi by 5:00 PM depending on where you started. The whole day runs 8 to 10 hours door to door. You'll have an air-conditioned vehicle for transfers, bottled water throughout, and a guide who speaks English or Vietnamese and knows the park. Travel insurance is included. Cave entry and Dark Cave activities are paid separately at the site.
