The Experience

We were already winding up the muddy path from Hau Thao when I realized how much my city legs had forgotten. Zizi met us at her homestay after the car picked us up (I was half-asleep but the hot shower woke me fast). Her mom made a breakfast that tasted like someone actually cared if you finished it—eggs, sticky rice, something green I couldn’t name. Our Hmong guide, Mai, grinned and pointed out the water buffalo grazing just past the first bend. They looked like they owned the place. The air smelled damp and earthy, almost sweet with wood smoke from someone’s kitchen drifting down. I kept stopping to stare back at the mountains—Mai laughed and said we’d never make it before dark if I kept doing that.

Lunch was just outside a village where chickens darted between our feet and kids shouted “hello!” as they ran by. Mai handed out rice wrapped in banana leaves; she made it herself this morning. We trekked higher, through terraces so green they looked fake in photos (but real enough when you slip on them). By late afternoon we reached Zizi’s mother’s house—the “buffalo house,” which is really where they keep an eye on livestock overnight. The walls are rough wood, cool to touch; dinner was cooked over an open fire with Zizi’s family chatting in Hmong around us. Someone poured rice wine into tiny cups—I tried to say thank you in their language and everyone burst out laughing (probably deserved). I remember lying on my mat later listening to rain start on the roof, feeling full and weirdly at home.

The next morning was slow—sunrise through mist, strong tea that nearly knocked me over. Saying goodbye to Zizi’s mom felt heavier than I expected. We trekked down past farmers already knee-deep in mud by sunrise, then crossed into a Red Dao village where women wore bright red scarves and invited us to look at their embroidery. There was a waterfall nearby—louder than I thought it would be—and we watched kids daring each other across slippery rocks below. After crossing a shaky suspension bridge into Supan (my legs still remember), we finally made it back for cold beer and spring rolls at Zizi’s place. That view from her bench—I still think about it sometimes when things get too noisy back home.

What’s included

Your two days include car pickup from Sapa bus station, luggage storage at Zizi homestay, breakfast before trekking out with your local guide Mai (or another English-speaking Hmong guide), homemade lunches en route through villages, overnight stay in Zizi’s mother’s traditional buffalo house with dinner and rice wine shared among family members—and all those little moments that don’t fit neatly into an itinerary but make you glad you came.
