The experience

The tour splits the island into two halves because eight to nine hours is enough to cover both if you move steadily. You start in the south at 9am with Pearl Farm, where you watch the guide demonstrate how pearls are extracted from oysters, then taste Sim wine (a rose myrtle wine made only on Phu Quoc) at the factory next door. The pepper gardens come next: Phu Quoc green pepper grows in the island's soil and carries a flavor local and foreign visitors seek out. Ho Quoc Pagoda, the largest Buddhist temple on the island, sits at the base of a lush mountain facing the sea.

Lunch happens at Sao Beach, where you can swim, try water sports (at your own cost) or collect starfish for photos. After eating, the itinerary turns toward history: Phu Quoc Prison, built by French colonists and known as Coconut Tree Prison, held over 32,000 prisoners in 1967 and now contains artifacts and statues recreating scenes of imprisonment. The fish sauce factory follows: Phu Quoc's production carries the same weight in Vietnam as olive oil in Italy or champagne in France, made from local ingredients using traditional methods. Tranh Stream waterfall, a 15-kilometer-long stream flowing through forest terrain, is a light trek through greenery (closed during rainy season May to October).

The northern half brings you to a bee farm where you learn beekeeping and taste pure honey, then Rach Vem, a traditional fishing village on the northern coast with mountain views and the option to swim at Starfish Beach. The day ends at Ganh Dau Cape, where you stand on rock and coral formations and look across the water to Ta Lon mountain in Cambodia. Seafood caught by local fishermen is cooked on the spot. You return to your hotel or meeting point around 5pm.
