The Experience

You'll notice the pickup time is tight — 8:15 to 8:30 from your hotel in central Duong Dong or from John's Tours office — which means the morning doesn't drag. The van collects you early enough that the Cua Can River still feels empty when you arrive, just a few other kayaks scattered along the bank and the sound of water moving under mangrove roots. Your guide hands you a paddle and points you toward the current. The river is narrow, the trees are old, and there's almost no one else there.

Before the kayaking, though, you stop at the Bee Farm on the way out of town. It's a working operation, not a tourist theater — they're actually making honey, and you taste it straight, which tastes nothing like the supermarket version. The farm closes Wednesdays, so that's worth knowing if you're planning the week. After that, the day opens up: you paddle the Cua Can for as long as the guide lets you, watching the river life happen around you instead of at you. Egrets, fishing nets, the occasional boat moving slowly past. Then you head inland through the national park, walking a forest trail with trees that have been standing for a century, and somewhere in there the guide points out the border — Cambodia is on the other side, visible through the trees.

Lunch happens in Rach Vem Village, a fishing community where you eat at a local restaurant and then have free time to swim at Starfish Beach. The starfish are real and small and everywhere in the shallow water. You can wade around, take photos, or just sit on the sand. The beach isn't crowded because most tours don't stop here long enough. By 16:00 you're back at your hotel, or if you want, the guide can drop you at Grand World Entertainment Theme Center on the way — you'd need to arrange your own return from there, but it's an option if your afternoon isn't finished.

The whole thing runs about eight hours. You get the kayak, bottled water, and air-conditioned transport included. If you're traveling with an infant, specialized seats are available — just mention it when you book.
