The experience

The boat leaves Duong Dong harbor around 10 AM after pickup from your hotel, and the first stop is the fishing grounds. The water is warm, the sky is wide, and there's no rush.

After fishing, the boat heads to Mong Tay Island or Gam Ghi Island (the guide picks based on conditions that day), where you'll snorkel in water clear enough that you see the reef without trying. The marine life isn't a nature documentary (it's just fish, coral, the occasional small ray), but it's real and it's there. You get snorkeling equipment, a big bottle of water, and enough time to actually swim instead of being herded through. By midday you're eating lunch on the boat with the seascape around you, fresh fruit after, and then a stop at May Rut Trong Island if there's time before heading back to your hotel by 4:30 PM.

The whole day is seven hours door-to-door, which sounds long until you realize it includes the drive to the harbor, the boat ride out, two islands, a meal, and the drive back.
