The experience

The day starts with a pickup from your Ho Chi Minh City hotel and a 1.5-hour drive south through rice fields to the Mekong Delta. On the way, you stop at Vinh Trang Pagoda, the largest in the region, before arriving in My Tho. From there, a motorized boat takes you onto the Tien River toward Qui Islet (Tortoise Island), passing fishing ports and boat-building workshops along the way. You'll see the Dragon, Phoenix and Unicorn Islets before stepping into a local fruit garden on the main island, where you taste tropical fruit while islanders perform traditional Southern Vietnamese folk music.

The afternoon shifts to Ben Tre, known as the land of coconuts. A rowing boat carries you through narrow canals completely shaded by water coconut trees. The only sound is the paddle and the water. You visit a coconut candy workshop to watch the candy being made by hand, then take an electric car around the island before heading back. Along the way, you stop at a bee house and can photograph pythons kept there. Lunch is served in the heart of an orchard garden, surrounded by the fruit trees you walked through that morning.

The return drive to Ho Chi Minh City takes about 1.5 hours, with arrival back at your hotel around 4:30 to 5pm. The entire day is handled by one English-speaking guide, and all transport, meals and boat rides are included.
