The driver showed up at the hotel at the time we agreed, and that detail—punctuality, a car waiting—turned out to matter more than we expected. Lang Co sits 60 kilometers south of Hue, a fishing township that looks like silk unspooling between two mountain passes, and the road there moves slowly enough that you can watch the landscape change. Verdant trees, crystal clear water, cloud cover on the mountains. The driver knows the spot where you stop to see the bay without getting out, and he knows which travelers want to walk down to the beach itself—you have to tell him at the start if that's you. Most people don't, because the real stop is Hai Van Pass, where the road climbs and the view opens up to both sides at once: green trees on one slope, the blue sea on the other, and at the peak a small rest station where someone brings coffee.

Ba Na Hills comes next, and this is where the timing gets real. The cable car takes you up to the Golden Bridge—a structure that looks like something from another world, 150 meters long with eight arches, and yes, couples do come here for wedding photos. The constraint is firm: you have to leave Ba Na before 3 p.m. to have enough daylight and time for the Marble Mountains, which sit south of Da Nang and rise above the roofs of homes like stone teeth. The mountains are famous for the caves inside them, the Buddha statues carved into rock, the way Buddhism and nature architecture exist in the same space. You walk through them, learn the stories, and then the drive to Hoi An is short—the road curves toward the coast and the old town appears, European and Asian cultures layered into one preserved place.
