The Experience

You get picked up from your Hue hotel and head south in a private air-conditioned car. The first stop is Lap An Lagoon, a fishing village ringed by trees where locals still work the water the way they have for generations. There's a coffee shop right there if you want to sit and watch, or just step out and look. It's about an hour from the city.

Lang Co comes next — a fishing township with a beach that made a list of the world's thirty most beautiful bays back in 2009. You can walk to a restaurant built over the water and order whatever the boats brought in that morning, or skip it and just stand on the sand. Then the road climbs into Hai Van Pass, one of Vietnam's most dramatic hillside routes. At the top, old French and American bunkers sit among the ruins of an ancient fortified gate, and the views drop away on both sides without you having to scramble up anything steep.

The final major stop is Marble Mountains, where massive stone peaks rise above the roofs and resorts around them. As the road curves closer, you see the stone dragons and seated Buddha figures carved into the rock face. The driver can explain the Buddhist architecture and how it sits in the landscape, or you can wander and photograph on your own. From there, it's the last stretch into Hoi An. Depending on which option you chose at checkout, you might also stop at An Bang Cemetery, Monkey Mountain, the Lady Buddha statue, or the Golden Bridge — each adds its own reason to the journey.
