The experience

The drive from Hue to Hoi An follows a route that climbs through Hai Van Pass, a historic mountain crossing built in the 18th century with a restored gate that frames views down to the coast. The pass itself is the spine of the journey, and the road cuts through it rather than around it, so you see the coastline drop away in both directions. Lang Co Beach sits below, a crescent of white sand backed by mountains, and the itinerary includes a stop there to photograph it or walk the shore.

Golden Bridge is the centerpiece. Suspended 1,400 meters up in Ba Na Hills, it is a footbridge painted gold and cradled by two enormous stone hands that rise from the mountainside. The hands are the structure (not a metaphor, but the actual support), and the bridge stretches between them. From there you look out over Danang, its lakes and mountains and the city sprawling below. Ba Na Hills also holds a French Village, a replica of a medieval European town with cobblestone streets and gardens, though the bridge itself is what draws the eye.

Marble Mountains, a cluster of five limestone peaks each named for one of the five elements, closes the tour before you reach Hoi An. The mountains hold caves, tunnels, and Buddhist sanctuaries carved into the rock. Your driver will take you to the base and you can explore on foot. The remaining hours of the 10-hour day account for travel time between stops. You end at your hotel in Hoi An's city center.
