The experience

The tour starts with pickup at your Hue hotel. From there, the driver takes you to whichever landmarks you've selected. You're not locked into a fixed itinerary the way most group tours are. Thien Mu Pagoda sits on a hilltop overlooking the Perfume River, its 17th-century Buddhist architecture standing against the water. The late afternoon light here is strong enough to photograph. The Imperial City holds the grand structures of the Nguyen Dynasty, the feudal-era seat of power that shaped Vietnam's history. The three royal tombs (Minh Mang, Khai Dinh and Tu Duc) each tell a different story through their architecture: Minh Mang blends stone and landscape; Khai Dinh mixes Western and Vietnamese styles in ways you won't see elsewhere; Tu Duc is the most romantic of the three, built by an emperor who loved poetry.
