Hue Private City Tour: Citadel, Royal Tombs & Perfume River
Your guide is a historian, not a driver, so every gate and courtyard comes with the Nguyen Dynasty story behind it.
A private guided tour of Hue's Imperial Citadel, royal tombs and Perfume River with your own car, licensed local guide, dragon boat and all entrance fees included. You choose between three options: one tomb with the Citadel and river (6 hours), two tombs with both (8 hours), or one tomb plus stops at family-run Hue food kitchens instead of a single lunch (6.5 hours). Route, timing and menu are confirmed on WhatsApp before the day, so dietary needs and the heat are planned around.

The Experience
You arrive at your hotel in Hue and your guide collects you at the time you chose when booking. The guide travels with you all day—not the driver, but a licensed local who explains the layout and the story of every stop. Your car is yours alone for the whole day, and on every option you get a private dragon boat on the Perfume River, all entrance fees, bottled water and food. The three options let you shape the day around what matters to you: the Citadel and one royal tomb if you want a morning pace, both the Citadel and two tombs if you want the full imperial run, or the Citadel, one tomb and a spread of Hue food stops across the day instead of a single lunch.
The Citadel is a walled UNESCO World Heritage Site where the Nguyen emperors ruled from 1802 to 1945. Your guide takes you through the Ngo Mon gate, past the Thai Hoa throne palace and the mandarin halls, and into the restored corners of the Forbidden Purple City—explaining who lived where and why the city is laid out the way it is. Between the Citadel and the tombs, you board a private dragon boat for about thirty minutes on the Perfume River to reach Thien Mu Pagoda, a seven-storey tower above a working monastery founded in 1601. You are seated the whole way, so it is the easiest part of the day if the heat is a concern. On the return, you travel by car. The pagoda itself has no entrance fee and a flat, short walk.
The royal tombs are spread outside the city, each one different. Minh Mang Tomb, finished in 1843, is the most formal—symmetrical courtyards, gates, lakes and bridges set in gardens. Khai Dinh Tomb, completed in 1931, is unlike anything else in Hue: blackened concrete and stone climbing a hillside, with an interior covered in glass and porcelain mosaic, but it involves a long flight of steps. Tu Duc Tomb is the largest and greenest, with pine woods, a lotus lake and a pavilion where the emperor wrote poetry—and it is the flattest to walk, which makes it the gentlest choice in hot weather. On the two-tomb option, you visit Khai Dinh and either Minh Mang or Tu Duc. On the other two options, you choose your single tomb from all three. If steps are a concern, your guide can swap Khai Dinh for Tu Duc or Minh Mang when you confirm the route on WhatsApp.
Food is included on every option. On the heritage days, you have a sit-down lunch at a family-run restaurant with a menu you agree on beforehand—vegetarian and other dietary needs are arranged in advance. On the food day, the eating is spread across the day instead: banh khoai and nem lui after the Imperial City, banh uot thit nuong after Thien Mu Pagoda, and Hue salt coffee to finish. If you want to add Thuy Xuan incense village, a roadside stop where makers craft incense and conical hats, tell your guide on the day or when you confirm your route on WhatsApp—there is no entrance fee and no charge to add it, and it takes about thirty minutes.
What’s included
Your private car with driver, hotel pickup and drop-off in Hue city, a licensed local guide who travels with you all day, a private dragon boat on the Perfume River, all entrance fees for the sites on your chosen option, food (a sit-down lunch on the heritage days or three Hue food stops on the food day), and bottled water.

Is this one for you?Choose the one-tomb option if you want a morning pace and time to linger at the Citadel and river. Pick the two-tomb option for the full imperial day without rushing. Go for the food option if you want to taste Hue across the day instead of sitting down for one meal, or if you prefer to graze and move between stops.

What is the difference between the three tour options?
Citadel, Boat & One Tomb (6 hours) includes the Imperial City, a private dragon boat on the Perfume River, Thien Mu Pagoda and one royal tomb of your choice, plus a sit-down lunch. Citadel, Boat & Two Tombs (8 hours) adds a second tomb—you visit Khai Dinh and either Minh Mang or Tu Duc. Citadel, Boat, Tomb & Hue Food (6.5 hours) replaces the single lunch with three food stops across the day: banh khoai, banh uot thit nuong and salt coffee at family-run kitchens around the city and river.
Can I choose which royal tomb to visit?
On the one-tomb and food options, you choose from Minh Mang, Khai Dinh or Tu Duc. On the two-tomb option, you visit Khai Dinh and then choose between Minh Mang or Tu Duc. If you are concerned about steps, Khai Dinh has a long flight—your guide can swap it for Tu Duc or Minh Mang, which are flatter, when you confirm your route on WhatsApp before the day.
What is included in the tour price?
All entrance fees for the sites on your chosen option, the private car and driver, hotel pickup and drop-off in Hue city, a licensed local guide for the whole day, a private dragon boat on the Perfume River, food (either a sit-down lunch or three food stops depending on your option), and bottled water. Nothing to buy at the gate.
How does the Perfume River boat work?
The private dragon boat is included on every option and takes about thirty minutes between the city pier and Thien Mu Pagoda. You are seated the whole way, so it is the easiest part of the day if you prefer not to be on your feet in the heat. You travel one way by boat and return to the city by car.
What happens if I have dietary restrictions or allergies?
When you book, you confirm your menu on WhatsApp before the day and tell your guide about vegetarian, allergies or other dietary needs. On the heritage days, lunch is at a family-run restaurant where your needs are arranged in advance. On the food day, the three stops can be adjusted to suit you.
Is there anything extra I can add to the tour?
Thuy Xuan incense village, where makers craft incense and conical hats, is free to add and takes about thirty minutes. Tell your guide on the day or when you confirm your route on WhatsApp, and it will be built into the itinerary at no extra charge.
