The Experience

I’ll admit, I booked this Hue private car tour mostly out of curiosity — I’d read about the Citadel and those old emperors but didn’t really know what to expect. After lunch came Tu Duc’s tomb — softer somehow, set around a lake with dragonflies skimming over the water. It got quiet there; you could hear frogs if you listened hard enough. Then Thien Mu Pagoda: seven stories tall, perched above the river with bells echoing faintly in the air. The pagoda’s caretaker nodded as we passed; he had this gentle way of moving that stuck with me for some reason.

The last part was wandering through Hue Citadel itself — so much bigger than I pictured. The walls are battered but still proud, red flags fluttering above old gates. Mr. Phuc told us stories about palace life and pointed out where bomb damage is still visible if you look closely (I didn’t expect that). By then my legs were tired but my head was buzzing with all these images and little moments — not sure I’ll ever see palaces or tombs quite the same way again.
