The Experience

Your guide picks you up at your hotel in central Hue at 7:30am and the tour heads north into Quang Tri province. The first stops trace the human cost of the war: Horror Highway, where thousands of civilians and soldiers were killed in hours of fighting along Vietnam Highway 1; Long Hung Church, one of the few buildings that survived the 1972 Eastern Offensive; and Quang Tri Ancient Citadel, where 81 days of fierce fighting in 1972 left the structure nearly destroyed by tons of bombs. The citadel now stands as a monument to Vietnamese resistance and a place to understand the war's scale.

The route continues to Dakrong Bridge, the entry point to the Ho Chi Minh Trail network that was hotly contested throughout the war and fell many times before being rebuilt as a suspension bridge. You'll pass through a Paco minority village and stop at Khe Sanh Combat Base Museum, housed at what was Ta Con Airport. The museum displays captured U.S. tanks and aircraft from the 170-day Battle of Khe Sanh, where 197 American planes were shot down or captured. After the break, the tour moves to Hien Luong Bridge at Ben Hai River, built by the French in 1950 across the 17th Parallel that divided North and South Vietnam for 21 years under the Geneva Agreements. The final and most significant stop is Vinh Moc Tunnels, a complex dug deep in the Demilitarized Zone where villagers sheltered during the bombing campaign. The tunnels provided both protection and living conditions for the Vinh Linh county people to survive and resist. You return to Hue with lunch, bottled water and all entrance fees already covered.
