Vinh Moc Tunnels tour: DMZ history & underground village

Walk through tunnels where villagers built an entire community underground.

A half-day DMZ tour from Hue explores the Demilitarized Zone that once divided North and South Vietnam, with stops at Quang Tri Citadel, the Hien Luong Bridge at the 17th Parallel, and Vinh Moc Tunnels: an underground village with kitchens, clinics and family rooms built to survive bombardment. An English-speaking guide leads the route and explains the war's impact on the region.

The experience

How do you see a war-era tunnel system that families actually lived in? The tour starts with a pickup from your Hue hotel around 7:30am and heads north toward Quang Tri Province, the heart of the old DMZ. The drive takes about an hour and a half, and along the way the guide points out the landscape that shaped the conflict: the same terrain where the front lines ran.

The first stops frame what you're about to see. Quang Tri Citadel, heavily damaged in 1972, stands as a memorial to the people killed there. Long Hung Church, preserved in ruins, shows the scale of the bombardment. Then comes the Hien Luong Bridge at the Ben Hai River, where the 17th Parallel once split the country in two. You walk across it and see the monuments marking that boundary. By the time you reach Vinh Moc, the context is already clear. This wasn't a military installation, it was a civilian refuge. The tunnels themselves hold wells, kitchens, clinics and separate rooms for each family, all carved underground to escape the air war above. The guide walks you through the layout and explains how the village functioned beneath the earth.

You're back in Hue by early afternoon, around 2pm. Depending on which option you book, lunch at a local restaurant is included, and entrance to the tunnels is covered. The whole experience runs four to six hours from pickup to return.

Is this one for you?Choose the Private Car option if you want to set your own pace and skip the meal stop; pick the PV Tour with Ticket if you want entry covered but prefer to eat elsewhere; go with the full Ticket & Meal option if you want everything arranged and included in one booking.

What exactly is Vinh Moc Tunnels and why was it built?

Vinh Moc Tunnels is an underground village constructed between 1965 and 1966 where local families lived and worked to survive relentless bombing during the war. The complex includes wells, kitchens, clinics and individual family rooms: a complete community built beneath the earth.

How long is the drive from Hue to the tunnels?

The drive from Hue to Vinh Moc takes about an hour and a half each way along Highway 1 toward Quang Tri Province. The tour includes stops at Quang Tri Citadel, Long Hung Church and the Hien Luong Bridge before reaching the tunnels.

What is the Hien Luong Bridge and why does it matter?

The Hien Luong Bridge crosses the Ben Hai River at the 17th Parallel, the line that once divided North and South Vietnam. You walk across it and see monuments marking this historic boundary, which is central to understanding the DMZ's role in the war.

Do I need to be fit to walk through the tunnels?
