Taste what Hanoians eat after sunset, from a jeep rolling past lantern-lit streets

A four-hour evening jeep tour through Hanoi's Old Quarter and West Lake, led by a guide in English, where you taste street food at four family-run spots and watch a chef prepare banh cuon. Hotel pickup is included for guests staying in the Old Quarter or you can meet at the Hanoi Opera House. The tour moves between neighborhoods by jeep, stopping to eat and explore on foot.

Step-by-step itinerary

Evening Hanoi Foodie Jeep Tour

  • Meet at hotel lobby for briefing
  • Watch Banh Cuon preparation
  • Drive through Old Quarter and Red River
  • Eat Bun Cha at family restaurant
  • Enjoy night views at West Lake
  • Try grilled seafood and Pho in Ngu Xa village
  • Pass Ho Chi Minh memorial and watch ceremony
  • Visit Train Street local market
  • Drink Vietnamese egg coffee and dessert

The Experience

The jeep picks you up at your hotel lobby at 1 p.m. or 6 p.m. for a safety briefing and route overview. From there you head into the Old Quarter, where the first stop is a local eatery known for banh cuon—steamed rolled cake—and you watch the skilled chef demonstrate how the ingredients come together before you eat. The ride then weaves through streets lit by colorful lanterns and decorative lights, following the Red River bank to take in the night views of Hanoi.

The second stage takes you to a family-run restaurant for bun cha, grilled pork with vermicelli noodles. A jeep ride over to West Lake lets you see the contrast between centuries-old architecture on one side and modern skylines on the other. Then you head to Ngu Xa village to try freshly grilled seafood, a Hanoian version of pho, banana salads and other traditional Vietnamese dishes.

The third stop passes the Ho Chi Minh memorial, where guards perform their nightly ceremonies, before heading into the densely packed streets of Train Street—a bustling alley full of locals cooking, selling wares and relaxing right next to active train tracks. The tour winds down at a popular cafe where you try Vietnamese egg coffee, a delicacy of whipped egg yolk with sugar and condensed milk, floated on espresso and dusted with cocoa powder, or a mango and caramel pudding dessert favored by locals. Bottled water, coffee and tea are included throughout.

What’s included

  • Pickup from your hotel in the Old Quarter or meeting point at Hanoi Opera House.
  • jeep transport between all four food stops.
  • tastings at each location including banh cuon, bun cha, grilled seafood, pho, banana salads and Vietnamese egg coffee or mango and caramel pudding.
  • bottled water, coffee and tea throughout.
