The Experience

The first thing I noticed was the hum—the city’s not quiet, but riding pillion behind Mai (our guide) on her motorbike made it all feel more like a heartbeat than noise. We zipped out from Hanoi Old Quarter, weaving past scooters stacked with baskets, and I tried not to look too startled every time someone honked. Long Bien Bridge is older than it looks in photos—rusted but somehow proud. Standing there above the Red River, you can see banana trees and tiny boats below. At one point we stopped for a quick snack at Cho Gioi market—sticky rice wrapped in banana leaf—and I tried to say thank you in Vietnamese. Mai laughed when I butchered it but helped me out. She told us stories about growing up here; honestly, that felt more real than any museum stop.

Lunch was at this family-run spot tucked away behind a row of parked bikes—no sign outside, just chatter and clinking bowls inside. We had bun cha (the smoky pork is something else), then finished with egg coffee that tasted like dessert and caffeine at once. By then I’d stopped worrying about helmet hair or looking lost; just felt…part of things for a while. On the way back to our hotel (included pickup makes life easier), I caught myself smiling for no reason at all. Still do sometimes when I think about that view from Long Bien Bridge.
