The Experience

The first thing that hit me was the smell — smoky pork grilling somewhere nearby as we squeezed into the old army jeep just outside Hanoi Old Quarter. Our guide, Minh, handed out these flimsy rain ponchos “just in case,” but honestly, I barely noticed the drizzle. The city felt alive in a way I hadn’t expected at night — scooters zipping past, someone laughing loudly from a tiny café window. We bounced along narrow streets until Minh waved us off for our first stop: bun cha near the Opera House. He joked about Obama eating here once (I tried not to think about how clumsy I looked with chopsticks). The pork was sweet and charred, noodles slippery — I could’ve stayed there all night.

But then we were off again, weaving through backstreets that got tighter and brighter as we went. At Ngu Xa Street, Minh ordered pho cuon for us — soft rice noodle rolls stuffed with beef and herbs. I tried to say it right (“cuon” — still not sure I nailed it) and Minh laughed, correcting me gently. There was also something crispy called pho chien phong; it almost shattered when I bit into it. The air smelled of fried dough and exhaust mixed together, which sounds weird but somehow fit perfectly with the chaos around us.

I didn’t expect to like Train Street as much as I did — it’s touristy but standing there with egg coffee warming my hands while locals glanced up from their card games felt oddly intimate. When the train finally rumbled through, everyone pressed back against the walls (I actually held my breath), and then just like that it was gone. The city lights flickered on puddles in the tracks and Minh grinned at us over his cup. Honestly, that moment sticks with me more than any photo could.
