The experience
You start with hotel pickup in Tashkent and travel to Khujand, a city that has stood for roughly 2,500 years. Founded by the Achaemenid emperor Cyrus and later rebuilt by Alexander the Great (who renamed it Alexandia Furthest), Khujand became a crucial junction on the Silk Road, connecting Samarkand to the Fergana Valley and onward to China. The guide walks you through that history as you move through the stops.
The Panjshanbe covered bazaar is the first major stop: the largest market in all of Tajikistan. Built in the mid-twentieth century and completed in 1964, the pavilion blends Soviet and Eastern architectural styles in a way you won't see elsewhere. The bazaar is always crowded with residents and visitors from nearby villages. The name itself means Thursday, the traditional trading day in Khujand. You move through the stalls and shops, seeing the variety of local fruits and the scale of daily commerce in the city center.
Next is the Khujand fortress, which has occupied the city's center for its entire 2,500-year span. The earliest fortification dates to the 6th–5th centuries BC, built as an earthen rampart that later became thick clay walls. During the Silk Road's peak, the fortress was rebuilt and the city expanded into three sections: the citadel, rabad, and shahristan. Genghis Khan's army destroyed it in 1219–1220, but in 1999 part of the eastern wall from the 8th–10th centuries was restored. The adjoining Museum of History and Local Lore holds 1,200 artifacts (household items, ceramics, and tools from the excavation) many of which are on display.
The final stop is the Sheikh Muslihiddin mausoleum, an architectural ensemble in the historical quarter built over the grave of a 12th-century ruler and poet. The complex includes a mosque, a 19th-century minaret standing over 20 meters tall, and the mausoleum itself. The original structure was destroyed during the Mongol invasion but was rebuilt in the 14th century. The tour ends here, and you return to your hotel in Tashkent.
