The experience

You leave Tashkent at 6:30am for the railway station, then board the Afrosiyob high-speed train at 7:30am, arriving in Bukhara at 11:17am. A guide and driver meet you at the station and move into the old city, where the day's walking tour begins. The itinerary covers the Lyabi-Khauz ensemble (three monumental buildings around a central reservoir) the Magoki-Attori Mosque in a residential quarter, and the Chor-Minor madrasah with its four small minarets crowned in blue domes. Each stop is a named landmark with its own history. The guide explains the role Bukhara played in the development of Islamic art and culture across centuries.

The tour continues through the trading domes, a massive hexagonal complex where shops sell knives, jewelry, music instruments and souvenirs under a spherical dome. You'll see the Kalyan minaret and the fifteenth-century Kalyan Mosque, visit the Ulugbek Madrasah built in 1417 by the best architects of the time, and stop at the Abdullazizkhan Madrasah from 1651–1652, the last large madrasah constructed in Bukhara. The Ark-Citadel, a residence of Bukhara khans with layers built from the 4th century BC onward, and the Bolo Haouz Mosque from 1712 round out the major sites. Lunch is included during the day, and your guide takes you to some of the best places to eat and shop, giving you a taste of everyday life in the city.

After the tour ends, you rest briefly at Bukhara airport before boarding an evening flight back to Tashkent, arriving around midnight. Entrance fees for all sightseeing places, both train tickets (Tashkent to Bukhara and return), and all ground transport are included. On rare occasions when the high-speed train is unavailable, the operator substitutes the most comfortable class of regular train.

What is the Samanid mausoleum and why is it on this tour?

The Samanid mausoleum, built in the 10th century, sits in the northwestern part of Bukhara just outside the historic center.
