The experience
The day starts early in Tashkent and ends with the return train in the evening, so you fit Samarkand's main landmarks into a single trip without staying overnight. The Afrosiyob bullet train carries you there in the morning and back the same day. Your guide meets you at the station and takes you through five centuries of Central Asian architecture and history. All entrance tickets are included, so you walk straight into each site.
Registan Square anchors the morning: three massive medreses (Islamic schools) face each other across the plaza, their tilework and arches rebuilt over centuries. From there you move to Gur Emir Mausoleum, where Tamerlane's tomb sits beneath a ribbed dome and holds the world's largest piece of jade. Bibi-Khanym Mosque, built after Timur's conquest of Delhi, shows the scale of 15th-century ambition: its minaret was meant to be the tallest of its time. You'll also walk through Siab Bazaar, Samarkand's largest traditional market, where clay ovens bake non bread and spice stalls line the narrow passages. The day closes at Shah-i-Zinda Necropolis, a complex of 44 tombs built over six centuries on the southeastern mound of ancient Afrosiab.
Your guide speaks English, Spanish, Italian, French or one of several other languages, and travels with you the whole day in an air-conditioned vehicle. The pace is set to fit all five major stops comfortably into the hours between trains, so you're not rushed through any single site.
