The experience
The tour begins with a transfer and hotel check-in in Tashkent, then unfolds across six days through three cities. A guide meets you each morning to lead excursions through Tashkent's Hazrati Imam Complex (where the world's oldest Quran sits in the Muyi Muborak Library), and through Chorsu Bazaar, a domed marketplace that has served traders for centuries. You'll see Amir Timur Square, Independence Square, and the Museum of Applied Arts, housed in a 19th-century diplomat's mansion with carved woodwork and vibrant ceramics. The Amir Timur Museum and the Center of Islamic Civilization, with its interactive galleries on the Silk Road and Islamic Golden Age, round out the capital.
On day three, you board the high-speed Afrosiyob train for a 2-hour 15-minute ride to Samarkand. The city centers on Registan Square, where three madrasahs stand with elaborate tile patterns and tall minarets. Your guide takes you to the Gur-Emir Mausoleum, the burial place of Amir Timur, then to Shah-i-Zinda, a necropolis of blue-tiled mausoleums dating to the 9th century. You'll visit the Ulugh Beg Observatory, where the 15th-century astronomer studied the stars, and the Bibi-Khanym Mosque, once among the world's largest, with its enormous dome and intricate mosaics. Siab Bazaar, a traditional market near the historic center, offers fresh fruits, spices, and local sweets.
The final leg is a 1-hour 30-minute train ride to Bukhara, a UNESCO-listed city that feels like an open-air museum. Lyabi-Hauz, a tranquil square centered on a historic pond, is surrounded by ancient madrasahs and tea houses. Chor Minor's four blue-domed towers stand as one of the city's most recognizable landmarks. The Trading Domes, brick structures with vaulted ceilings dating to the 16th century, remain a lively bazaar for silk, spices, and jewelry. You explore the Ulugh Beg and Abdullaziz Khan madrasahs, the Ark Fortress with its thick adobe walls and former royal chambers, and the Samanid Mausoleum, a 10th-century structure of baked bricks in geometric patterns and a UNESCO World Heritage site. On the final full day, you visit the Sitorai Mokhi-Khosa Palace, the summer residence of Bukhara's last emirs, with its "White Hall" of lace-like ganch carvings and peacocks in the grounds; the Memorial Complex of Bahoutdin Naqshband, a pilgrimage site for the Naqshbandiya Sufi Order; and the Chor-Bakr Memorial Complex, a 16th-century necropolis of the Juibar sheikhs. A transfer returns you to Bukhara Railway Station for the train back to Tashkent, followed by an airport transfer on the final day.
