The experience

The route moves you through four cities in six days, each one a different chapter of Central Asian history. You start in Tashkent with the Hazrati Imam Complex, its 16th-century mosaics and the Uthman Quran, the world's oldest, housed in the Muyi Muborak Library. From there, the high-speed Afrosiyob train carries you 2 hours 15 minutes to Samarkand, where Amir Timur's empire left its mark. Registan Square holds three madrasahs built between 1417 and 1436, their facades covered in geometric tilework that has survived five centuries. Shah-i-Zinda runs as a narrow avenue of mausoleums dating back to the 9th century, each one decorated in blue and turquoise tiles. The Gur-Emir Mausoleum, completed in 1404, holds Timur himself.

A 1 hour 30 minute train ride takes you to Bukhara, where the rhythm shifts to bazaars and fortress walls. The Ark Fortress rises from the 5th century. Inside are courtyards, museums, and the chambers where khans ruled. The Samanid Mausoleum, built around 905 AD entirely from baked bricks in geometric patterns, stands as one of the oldest structures in Central Asia and a UNESCO site. Chor Minor's four blue-domed towers date to 1807. The trading domes, Toki, have sold silk and spices since the 16th century and still do. You walk through them with a guide who explains what merchants once moved along these routes.

A 6-hour train journey brings you to Khiva, the final stop. Ichan-Kala, the walled inner city, contains everything from the 10th century onward: the Juma Mosque with 213 carved wooden columns (some over 1,000 years old), the Pahlavan Mahmud Mausoleum with its turquoise dome, and the Islam Khodja Minaret at 56.6 meters tall, which you can climb for a view across the old city. Kalta Minor, the unfinished minaret started in 1851, rises only 26 meters but was meant to reach 70: construction stopped when the khan died. From Khiva, you fly back to Tashkent. Hotels include breakfast and Wi-Fi. Your guide speaks English and is available in 13 other languages. Pickup is included at each city.
