The experience

How do you fit Samarkand's main landmarks into a single day from Tashkent? The tour handles the logistics: you're picked up in Tashkent, taken to the train station, and board the Afrosiyab, Sharq, or Nasaf train for the journey to Samarkand. Your guide meets you at arrival and takes you straight into the city in an air-conditioned vehicle. The route covers four major sites, each one a distinct period of Timurid architecture and history.

Registan Square is the centerpiece: three madrasahs facing each other across a plaza that was once a public gathering place. The Ulugh Beg Madrasah dates to 1417–1420 and was one of the Islamic world's most prestigious educational institutions; the Sher-Dor Madrasah (1619–1636) is unusual for its tiger mosaics on the façade, a rare use of animal imagery in Islamic architecture; the Tilya-Kori Madrasah (1646–1660) is known for its gold-leaf interior. From there you move to the Gur-e-Amir Mausoleum, built around 1403–1404 as the tomb of Amir Timur (Tamerlane) and his family, recognizable by its blue ribbed dome and interior decorated with gold leaf and marble. The Shah-i-Zinda Necropolis is an avenue of mausoleums built between the 11th and 15th centuries, with brilliant blue and turquoise tilework and glazed ceramic decorations. You also visit the Bibi-Khanym Mosque, built between 1399 and 1404 after Timur's campaign in India and named for his wife. It was one of the largest mosques in the Islamic world at completion and has been restored after earthquake damage.

The tour includes a stop at Siab Bazaar, the largest traditional market in Samarkand, where you can see spices, dried fruits, fresh bread, and local handicrafts. Bottled water is provided throughout the day. The return train departs in the evening, getting you back to Tashkent by night. Choose the all-inclusive option if you want entrance fees and lunch included. The standard option covers the train, transport, and guide, leaving entry tickets for you to purchase on-site.

Top questions

What languages is the tour guided in?

Live guide in English and Russian.

What's the difference between the standard and all-inclusive Samarkand tour options?

The standard option includes round-trip train tickets, air-conditioned transport, and a professional guide. You pay for entrance fees at each site. The all-inclusive option adds entrance fees to all four landmarks and lunch, so everything is covered upfront.

How long is the train ride from Tashkent to Samarkand?

The Afrosiyab, Sharq, or Nasaf trains connect the two cities. The tour is 12 hours total from pickup to return, including the train journey, transport within Samarkand, and time at each site.

What is Registan Square and why is it the main stop?

Registan Square is the heart of historic Samarkand, a plaza surrounded by three madrasahs (Islamic schools) built between the 15th and 17th centuries. The Ulugh Beg Madrasah is one of the most prestigious educational institutions ever built; the Sher-Dor is famous for tiger mosaics; the Tilya-Kori features a gold-decorated mosque interior. It's the most recognizable architectural ensemble in Central Asia.

Can I visit Samarkand if I'm traveling with young children?

Yes. Infants and small children can travel in a pram or stroller, and the tour is suitable for all physical fitness levels. The 12-hour day is long, so consider whether your children can manage the train ride and walking between sites.

What is Shah-i-Zinda and what makes it different from the other sites?

Shah-i-Zinda is a necropolis: an avenue of mausoleums built between the 11th and 15th centuries, connected by legend to Qusam ibn Abbas, a cousin of the Prophet Muhammad. Unlike the madrasahs and mosques, it's a pilgrimage site decorated with brilliant blue, turquoise, and cobalt tilework and intricate mosaic work, with tombs of Timurid royalty and noble families.

Does the tour include time to shop or eat at local restaurants?

The tour includes a stop at Siab Bazaar, the largest traditional market in Samarkand, where you can browse spices, dried fruits, handicrafts, and local snacks. Lunch is included only in the all-inclusive option. If you book the standard option, you'll need to arrange meals separately or purchase them at the bazaar.
