You can swim inside a Navy ship that sank on purpose and is now a living reef.

A two-tank wreck dive off Key Largo on the USS Spiegel Grove, a 510-foot Navy vessel resting at 130 feet and now one of the world's largest artificial reefs. The first dive explores the massive hull (decks, passageways and structure so large you cannot see both ends from any single point), then the captain repositions for a second dive on a shallower reef, another wreck, or the Spiegel Grove again. Advanced Open Water certification logged within the past year is required. The trip runs about four hours and returns around noon. Tanks, weights and professional crew support are included. Full gear rental, dive computers and SMBs are available to rent or buy at the shop, and Nitrox is available for extended bottom time.

The experience

What makes the Spiegel Grove different from most wreck dives is the sheer size: 510 feet of Navy ship sitting upright at 130 feet, with decks and passageways large enough that you cannot see both ends from any single point. Over two decades of coral growth have turned the hull into a thriving ecosystem. Goliath grouper, barracuda, jacks and moray eels are on every dive. The occasional bull shark passes through. You board the boat for a 45-minute ride to the wreck, then descend into structure that feels less like a dive site and more like exploring an underwater building.

The trip includes two dives. Your first is on the Spiegel Grove itself: the massive decks and open passageways are the draw. After you surface and spend time on the boat, the captain repositions to a second site: a shallower reef, another wreck, or back to the Spiegel Grove if conditions and your air allow. Each diver must carry a dive computer and SMB (surface marker buoy), both available to rent or purchase at the shop. Nitrox is available for $14 per tank if you want extended bottom time. Tanks and weights are included in the price. Full gear rental is available as an add-on if you don't bring your own.

The whole trip runs about four hours and returns around noon. You'll need Advanced Open Water certification with a dive logged within the past year to book. After the dive, you cannot fly or travel to high altitude until at least 18 hours have passed. Plan to stay on the ground until the following day.

What is the USS Spiegel Grove and why is it at 130 feet?

The USS Spiegel Grove is a 510-foot Navy ship that was deliberately sunk off Key Largo to create an artificial reef. It now sits upright at 130 feet and has become one of the largest purpose-sunk artificial reefs in the world, with decades of coral growth turning the hull into a thriving ecosystem.

How many dives do I get on this trip?

You get two dives per trip. The first dive is on the USS Spiegel Grove itself. After surfacing and spending time on the boat, the captain repositions to a second site: either a shallower reef, another wreck, or back to the Spiegel Grove depending on conditions.

What gear do I need to bring, and what can I rent?

You must bring or rent a dive computer and SMB (surface marker buoy). Both are available at the shop. Tanks and weights are included. Full gear rental is available as an add-on if you don't have your own equipment. Nitrox is available for $14 per tank if you want extended bottom time at depth.

What certification do I need to book this dive?

Advanced Open Water certification is required, and your last dive must have been logged within the past year. Divers must be at least 15 years old. After the dive, you cannot fly or travel to high altitude for at least 18 hours. Plan to stay on the ground until the following day.

What kind of marine life will I see on the Spiegel Grove?

The wreck is home to goliath grouper, barracuda, jacks and moray eels on every dive. The occasional bull shark also passes through. Decades of coral growth have transformed the hull into a thriving ecosystem.
