Dive your way, not the group's way

A self-guided 2-tank scuba dive in Key Largo where certified divers explore at their own pace with a buddy on a 45-foot catamaran. The crew handles setup and safety while you choose how long to stay at each reef site. Tank rental, weights and snacks are included; snorkelers can join the same boat.

The Experience

Check in at Amoray Dive Center, then board the 45-foot catamaran with plenty of room to move around and relax between dives. The captain briefs you on safety and the day's conditions before departure. Unlike a guided group tour where everyone follows the same route and timeline, you and your buddy enter the water when you're ready and explore the reef at your own pace—staying longer at a site if something catches your eye, moving on if you want to cover more ground. The crew is on deck the whole time to help with gear and answer questions, but the dive itself is yours to shape.

Two reef sites are selected each day based on visibility and marine life, so the captain is reading conditions rather than running a fixed route. After the first dive, you surface for a short interval to switch tanks, grab a snack, and catch your breath before heading down again. Because the boat welcomes both divers and snorkelers, it can access a wider range of locations than dive-only operations—useful if you're traveling with someone who doesn't dive. The laid-back atmosphere means no rushing between stops or waiting for slower divers to catch up; the day moves at the pace that works for you and your buddy.

If you're diving solo, the crew will try to match you with another certified diver; if that's not possible, you can add a professional guide for an extra fee. If you haven't been diving in the past 12 months, a guide is required. The whole experience runs about 4 hours from check-in to return.

Top questions

What does a self-guided dive mean—am I completely on my own underwater?

Self-guided means you and your buddy explore the reef together without a guide leading the group, so you set the pace and choose where to look. The crew is always on the boat ready to help with gear, answer questions before you enter the water, and monitor your safety from the surface. A professional guide can be added if you're diving solo or if your skills need a refresh.

How do you pick which reefs we dive on each day?

The captain selects the two dive sites based on that day's conditions—visibility, currents, and where marine life is active. This approach means you're diving the best spots available rather than following a fixed schedule, and it also lets the boat access a wider range of locations than smaller operations.

Can my partner come if they don't dive?

Yes. Snorkelers are welcome on the same boat, so non-divers can explore the reef from the surface while you're underwater. It's a good option for families or groups with mixed interests who want to spend the day together.

What's included in the price?

Tank rental, weights, snacks and crew support are included. Alcoholic beverages are available for an additional fee if you want them.

Do I need recent diving experience to book this?

You must be certified. If you've dived within the past 12 months, you're good to go. If it's been longer than a year, a professional guide is required. If it's been more than a few years, a refresher course is recommended before booking.

What's the age requirement for children?

Children must be at least 10 years old to dive. Infants and small children can come along on the boat if they're with an adult, and snorkelers of any age are welcome.
