The experience
What sets this program apart is how much time you spend preparing before the ocean. Your morning starts with a classroom briefing on the fundamentals (breathing through a regulator, equalizing, and underwater hand signals), then you gear up and head to the pool to practice skills in shallow water at your own pace. Your PADI-certified instructor watches for confidence, not the clock. You move on when you're ready, not when the schedule says so. After a lunch break, you board the dive boat and head to the reef.
The reef itself is the only living barrier reef in the continental US. On your two guided dives, you'll explore coral formations and see tropical fish, nurse sharks, eagle rays, sea turtles, goliath groupers, and barracuda: no dangerous animals, just the reef as it is. Your instructor stays with you the whole time. The program wraps up around 5 PM. On days when sea conditions prevent boats from going out, you dive instead at Jules' Undersea Lodge lagoon, a protected mangrove lagoon with its own underwater habitat.
The full day (classroom, all scuba equipment, pool training, dive boat, and your dedicated instructor) is covered in the price. You'll need your own transportation between the dive shop, pool site, and marina. They're a few minutes apart. You must be able to swim comfortably in water too deep to stand without flotation, and you'll fill out a PADI medical questionnaire before the day starts. If you answer yes to any question, a signed doctor's release is required.

What's the coral barrier reef in Key Largo actually like when you get there?

Do I need to know how to dive already, or is this for complete beginners?
