Discover Scuba Diving: Pool Training in Key Largo

Learn to breathe underwater in the pool before the reef.

The Discover Scuba Diving pool training at Key Largo's Bayside Inn is a two-hour prerequisite class where you practice foundational scuba skills in controlled water with an instructor before advancing to open water. Mask, fins, BCD, regulator, cylinder and wetsuit (if needed) are included. Children from age 10 are welcome. Successful completion qualifies you for the separate Discover Scuba Reef Excursion on the dive boat, though that outing is booked independently.

The experience

Bayside Inn Key Largo hosts the pool training on-site, which means you can stay at the same location and move straight from your room to the water. The two-hour session starts with a poolside briefing where your instructor walks you through the gear and the basic skills you'll practice. Once you're in the pool wearing the full setup (mask, fins, BCD, regulator and cylinder), you focus on the core movements: how to breathe steadily through the regulator, how to equalize pressure, and how to move with control underwater. The pool setting lets you repeat each skill until it feels natural, without the variables of current or depth.

Completion of this pool session is what qualifies you to join the dive boat for the Discover Scuba Reef Excursion, which is a separate booking. That means you move from the controlled environment into open water only after you've built confidence in the basics. The instructor is there throughout to answer questions and adjust your technique. All equipment (mask, fins, snorkel, BCD, regulator, scuba cylinder and wetsuit if you need one) is provided.

The pool is the right place to work through that. Your instructor will go at your pace, letting you practice the breathing technique in shallow water until it becomes automatic. Many people feel more confident after the first few minutes once they realize the regulator works exactly as explained.
