The Experience

If you have a free day in San Diego and want to taste wine without driving, this tour handles the route and the timing. A private van picks up your group at your hotel or home (anywhere south of Mission Valley) at 9:00am and heads south toward Guadalupe Valley. On the way, you stop at El Mirador for a view of the bay and a chance to pick up traditional Mexican candy from vendors before reaching the first winery at 11:00am.

The three wineries rotate based on what's open that day, so you'll taste reds, whites and rosés at each stop. At the second winery around 12:30pm, you get a cheese platter alongside the tastings and a tour of the wine-making process itself—the equipment, the fermentation setup, how the bottles move through the cellar. By 2:00pm you're at Finca Altozano for a four-course lunch built on BajaMed cuisine (farm-to-table cooking that blends Baja California ingredients with Mediterranean technique), prepared by chef Javier Plascencia, who holds a Michelin star. The final winery visit happens at 4:00pm for more tastings and time to sit with what you've learned before the drive back to San Diego.

This is a private tour, meaning your group travels alone in an air-conditioned van with no strangers. A live guide speaks English, Spanish or Italian throughout the day. If you have a particular winery in mind, let the operator know and they'll try to work it into the itinerary. The tour runs about ten hours total. Children are welcome from age 4.
