The Experience
Ever wondered if you’d actually stand up on a surfboard, or just tumble straight into the Pacific? I had that thought as we pulled up to the beach outside Lahaina, Maui — boards stacked, rash guards in hand, sun already bright but not too hot yet. Our instructor, Kaleo, greeted us with this easy smile and a quick “Aloha,” which somehow made me feel less nervous about making a fool of myself in front of friends (and strangers watching from shore).
The lesson started right there on the sand. Kaleo talked us through water safety and how to read the waves — he even drew little diagrams with his finger in the wet sand. I could smell sunscreen and that salty tang you only get this close to the ocean. When we finally waded out, reef shoes squishing a bit awkwardly at first, I realized how warm the water was compared to what I’m used to back home. There was this moment when my friend tried to paddle out and got spun around by a wave — Kaleo just laughed and shouted some encouragement in Hawaiian (I think?), then paddled over to help her reset.
Somehow, by the end of it, every single one of us managed to stand up — even if it was just for three seconds before splashing down again. The soft-top boards were way more forgiving than I expected. And honestly? That feeling of catching your first wave… it’s like time slows down for a second. My arms are still sore as I write this but I keep replaying that brief glide toward shore in my head. We left sandy, tired, and kind of proud — and yeah, maybe still picking seaweed out of our hair later at lunch.
What’s included
Your morning includes protective reef shoes so you won’t worry about sharp rocks underfoot, a clean SPF-50 rash guard to keep you safe from sunburns, brand new soft-top boards that make learning easier (trust me), plus an experienced instructor who guides your group step by step until you’re catching waves together.
